Alimentary Tract Atresias associated with Anorectal Malformations: 10 Years’ Experience

Abstract: Anorectal malformation (ARM) is one of the most common congenital anomaly that requires emergency surgery in the neonatal period. ARMs are frequently associated with other life threatening congenital anomalies. Commonly associated anomalies are genito-urinary, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, skeletal and spinal. Alimentary tract anomalies are frequently masked by the intestinal obstruction produced by the anorectal atresia. This retrospective study was carried out to find out the incidence of associated ali… Show more

“…First stage entails a divided ostomy, whereas the proximal loop helps to decompress and evacuate the bowel contents while the distal is used for performing a distal colostogram to determine any fistulous communication between the rectum and the urinary system. After optimizing the nutritional status, definitive correction follows 15 . Definitive treatment is either in the form of posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) in case of a well‐calibrated distal colon or colostomy pull‐through especially if shorter segments or absent colon are encountered 14 .…”

“…tinal atresia. [4][5][6] ARM with CA is a very rare association, with only a few cases reported in literature. [2,3] In the index case, colonic atresia was associated with a very rare anorectal malformation in a female patient.…”

“…Anorectal malformations (ARM) occur in approximately 1 in every 5000 live births while intestinal atresia (IA) incidence is estimated to range between 1.3 and 3.5 per 10,000 live births [ 1 ]. The simultaneous presence of both anomalies in one patient is particularly rare [ [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] , [6] , [7] , [8] ]. The prenatal diagnosis of IA or ARM is possible using ultrasound with a sensitivity of 50% and a specificity of 71% [ 9 ].…”
