Alkaline phosphatase activities among planktonic communities in the northern Red Sea

Abstract: During a June 1996 cruise in the northern Red Sea, we studied spatial distributions of alkaline phosphatase (AP) activities in different plankton size fractions and in the aqueous fraction which passes through 0.2 pm filters. AP proved to be a highly stable compound In the Red Sea and has potential use as an indicator for inorganic P-availability to planktonic communities. Depth profiles showed that aqueous and particulate alkaline phosphatase activities were highest in surface waters. The contribution of the … Show more

“…In the Northern Gulf of Aqaba, another P-limited system, APA was shown to be correlated with abundance of Synechococcus sp. (Li et al 1998). APA can also be found in particle-free water, as it has a long lifetime when released from its extracellular location on phytoplankton cells (Li et al 1998); thus, in dynamic systems, a strong relationship to chl a would not be expected.…”

Our findings do not permit us at this point to identify the source of the organic nutrients, and in fact the variation in the δ 15 N values of particulate matter at the start of the bioassay experiments (Fig.…”

“…, Klinker et al 1978, Sommer 2000, Sommer et al 2002, 2) phytoplankton of the northern Red Sea are constituted mainly of ultraphytoplankton (Lindell & Post 1995, Li et al 1998, Yahel et al 1998 which are too small (Ͻ8 mm) to be manipulated by its mouth parts, 3) this species may change its food items opportunistically as in some other pontellid species (Ohtsuka & Onbé 1991), and 4) the number of analyzed specimens was too small to detect vegetative foods in their guts.…”

“…We performed microscopic analysis of APA (Dyhrman et al 2002) by using Enzyme-Labeled Fluorescence 97 (ELF97), as well as conventional measurements of bulk APA (Li et al 1998, Fu & Bell 2003. ELF97 forms an insoluble fluorescent particle after hydrolysis, which enables visualiza-tion of APA.…”
