All Fatigue is Not Created Equal

Abstract: Objectives Fatigue is known to be a pathway through which depression, psychological distress, pain intensity, and sleep disturbance influence pain interference, but the independent effects of fatigue on pain interference after controlling for these variables remains unknown. Additionally, no study to date has tested whether fatigue subtypes of general fatigue, mental fatigue, emotional fatigue, physical fatigue, or vigor differentially predict pain interference. Methods The current study tested these associa… Show more

“…Pain may affect satisfaction with social activities through several mechanisms. For example, chronic pain may exacerbate depression, 65 negative affect, 22 and fatigue 9 , 10 , 12 —each of which may limit one's willingness to participate in social leisure activities or alter perceptions of how enjoyable those activities are. If young women are avoiding participating in social activities because of their chronic pain or are dissatisfied with those activities, this may serve to perpetuate depression, anxiety, and loneliness that contribute to long-term pain disability in later adulthood.…”

“…The mechanisms underlying these relationships remain an important area for future research. Sleep could enhance program success by increasing emotion regulation ability,42 improving encoding and rehearsal of information,43 reducing fatigue,44 reducing the perceived intensity of pain,45 or via numerous other mechanisms. Improvements in sleep may also change physiology in ways that promote health, for example, it may decrease inflammation and improve immunity among other benefits 46.…”
