The consistent architectural transparency demand in buildings is highly promoting the structural use of glass, in combination or to replace loadbearing components made of traditional constructional materials. Despite its huge application in facades, roofs, envelopes, frame components, however, glass still represents a rather innovative and not well-known material, requiring specific design conceptsm and further extended studies, toward the fulfillme nt of safe design requirements. A key role in glass systems and assemblies involving multiple components is given to connections. Major issues in their design, consequently, arise from restraining single glazing elements, as well as from ensuring their mechanical interaction with other constructional systems, as a part of full 3D buildings, including several materials, and various loading/boundary conditions. In this paper, an overview of typical connection types in use for glass systems is presented, with special consideration for mechanical, adhesive, and laminated adhesive connections, giving evidence of their typical applications, evolution, current design issues. Existing research and major projects are also discussed, both at the material/component level as well as at the assembly level.

“…Each of these connections is composed of a 400 x 50 mm titanium insert embedded in the fin and two similar inserts embedded in the cladding panels at either side of the joint. These were designed as described in Teixidor et al [1] The connection is achieved with four small clamp plates hidden in the joint which are bolted to the fin and inserted in a groove machined in the cladding inserts. These provide an effective load transfer in out-of-plane direction, while at the same time blocking the lateral displacement of the fins with the use of auxiliary nylon spacers.…”

The iconic Torre Europa building in Madrid has been refurbished recently. The works included the construction of a new entrance hall composed of two structural glass façades and a steel canopy above them. This paper focuses on the design and construction of the two structural glass façades, which are made up of a number of laminated glass panels standing on the ground floor slab and stabilised by vertical glass fins. The top end of the fins is connected to an horizontal glass beam that extends along the two façades forming an L‐shape with both ends fixed to the primary structure of the building.
