Allergic contact dermatitis from 3‐(aminomethyl)‐pyridyl salicylate

Abstract: 2 patients with acute allergic contact dermatitis from 3-(aminomethyl)-pyridyl salicylate are described. Both patients were females with histories of urticaria and showed cross-sensitization to substances of the para group. Clinical manifestations included eczema, angioedema and respiratory effects. In 1 patient, airborne elicitation was suspected. A lymphocyte transformation test confirmed the allergy, with an extremely high response index. 35 normal controls were negative.

“…Methyl 0-(2-ethylbutyryl)salicylate, methyl diethylacetylsalicylate or methyl butetisalicylate, is applied topically as a 30% cream for musculoskeletal, joint, and soft-tissue pain. Salicylates are widely used in many topical analgesics; however, contact sensitivity to salicylates has been reported in only a few cases (1)(2)(3)(4). To the best of our knowledge, contact dermatitis from methyl butetisalicylate has not previously been reported.…”
