Allergic gastrointestinal motility disorders in infancy and early childhood

Abstract: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, constipation and colic are among the most common disorders in infancy and early childhood. In at least a subset of infants with these functional disorders, improvement after dietary elimination of specific food proteins has been demonstrated. Gastrointestinal food allergy should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis of infants presenting with persistent regurgitation, constipation or irritable behaviour, particularly if conventional treatment has not been bene… Show more

“…Eosinophilic esophagitis has recently been identified as another condition closely related to food allergy, particularly in children [136]. Symptoms of gastrointestinal food allergy include persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, vomiting, failure to thrive, irritable behavior, and feeding difficulties [137,138]. These conditions are caused by non-IgE-mediated mechanisms and are generally characterized by noninfective gastrointestinal inflammation with an increase in mucosal T lymphocytes, eosinophils, mast cells, or basophils.…”

“…Infant colic (more than 3 hours of crying a day, 3 days for more than 3 weeks) is not unanimously considered as a consequence of CMPA. The paediatrician has to consider the opportunity of a cow's milk free diet in the most troublesome cases [26,27]. Mild immediate reactions may be of difficult interpretation because they can be the result of causes different from CMPA.…”
