Allergies and suicidal behaviors: A systematic literature review

Abstract: Analysis of the results indicates a link between allergies and suicidality, particularly suicide mortality; however, results for nonfatal suicidal behaviors are mixed. It is important that further research by using more rigorous study designs be carried out to lend strength to these findings.

“…271, 272 A recent systematic review confirms an association between allergic disease and suicidal behavior, in particular with suicide mortality. 273 Although evidence related to non-fatal suicidal behavior was considered not as strong as for fatalities, a recent study replicated the relationship between tree-pollen counts and fatal suicidal behavior in women, and additionally reported a positive relationship between grass pollen and attempted suicide for both genders. 274 It is possible that the released mediators of allergic inflammation, rather than just symptoms of allergy, may increase risk of suicidal behavior, as in a pharmacoecological study, intranasal corticosteroids (known to reduce multiple mediators of inflammation) have been associated with lower suicide rates.…”

“…The goal of the molecular psychosomatic approach is to understand the interrelation between stress and neuroendocrine‐immune interactions from behavior to the molecular level. If successful, diagnosis and treatment of dermatologic patients can greatly profit from the integration of biological‐somatic and psychosocial aspects into one unifying bio‐psycho‐social approach.…”

“…Das Ziel des molekularen psychosomatischen Ansatzes bei der Beschäftigung mit diesen Themenfeldern ist, die Wechselbeziehung von Stress und neuroendokrin‐immuner Interaktion bis auf die molekulare Ebene zu verstehen. Gelingt dies, ist eine Integration von biologisch‐somatischen und psychosozialen Aspekten in der Diagnostik und Versorgung dermatologischer Patienten von Anfang an möglich und produktiv.…”
