Allergische Pilzsinusitis, Fungusball und invasive Mykose der Nasennebenhöhlen – drei distinkte, pilzinduzierte Krankheitsbilder

Abstract: Despite the fact that allergic fungal sinusitis is the most common fungal disease of the paranasal sinuses, it is not well known among physicians and pathologists and therefore underrepresented within the diagnoses of paranasal infections. The term "aspergilloma" is imprecise and does not represent a clear diagnosis. A further differentiation in "fungus ball" (without invasion) and "invasive sinonasal mycosis" is required. The three groups of fungal-related sinusitis occur at different ages. Allergic fungal si… Show more

“…Most of the patients in our study had a disease history of seven to 12 weeks. The association of FRS to diabetes mellitus was 33.33%, which aligns with the findings by Navya et al [14] and Driemel et al [17]. Most patients with chronic FRS were from urban areas with poor socioeconomic status, which aligns with reports by Nazeri et al [18] and Challa et al [8].…”

“…AFS is treated much differently than IFS and must be marked with discerning histopathologic features of IFS that is inflammatory cells within the tissue instead of free-floating in mucin, presence of fungal elements within the vascular spaces and tissues. [1621] The fungus ball (mycetoma) is a different type of noninvasive fungal rhinosinusitis which is delineated as an accumulation of debris and fungal elements inside a PNS. Fungus ball of the PNS is characterized by a mass of fungal elements and fruiting heads of fungi and minimal host immune responses.…”
