In recent years, the demand for food resources of aquatic origen has increased considerably and this has allowed resorting to the exploration of alternative resources. Within these, some intertidal crustaceans such as the “rock crab” Grapsus grapsus and Calappa convexa “box crab” stand out due to their frequency and easy capture, which is frequently of the shrimp (Penaeus) by-catch and lobster (Panulirus) fishing. Both species of crabs, due to their sizes and abundance, represent an economic and nutritional interest for coastal fishermen in northwestern Mexico. At present, there is no fishing regulation on these resources and it is necessary and urgent to take regulatory measures of their population status of these crabs, which are constantly captured by fishermen but without biological or administrative control by te authorities responsable for their management fishing in this area.

Se analizó el crecimiento relativo de langosta espinosa Panulirus gracilis, con un enfoque de selección multimodelo y la teoría de la información de Akaike. Se realizaron muestreos en capturas comerciales de langosta espinosa del sur de Sinaloa, México entre las temporadas de pesca de 2014 y 2015 y, 2017 y 2018. En 298 hembras de P. gracilis se registró la longitud cefalotórax (LC) mm, peso total (PT) g y fase de madurez gonádica. La estructura de tallas varió de 54.6 a 103.1 mm de LC. Se observaron hembras maduras a partir de 57.5 mm de LC, con un incremento de proporción de madurez en tallas mayores. El mejor modelo fue Línea Rota (Wi=65.09%) y Dos Segmentos (Wi%=34.87). El cambio en el crecimiento relativo a la talla en ambos modelos, coincidió con un incremento en la proporción de madurez en tallas mayores a 60 mm de LC en P. gracilis.

Relative growth can help to identify dimorphism between individuals, and it is also used to determine changes in ontogeny related to sexual maturity. The morphometric variables recorded were width, length and height in carapace and chelae. The abdomen width was taken only in females. Data analysis was made separating males and females. Exploratory analysis used maximum, minimum and mean values and compared these values between sexes using MANOVA, ANOVA and LSD-Fisher methods. A weight-size relationship was also determined. Relative growth was estimated using a multi-model approach. Six models were applied, and the best was selected using Akaike and Bayesian information criteria. Residual versus predicted graphics were also produced based on the selected models. The mean sizes were similar between sexes, but the maximum values were observed in males. The weight-size relationships showed a negative allometry. The best model varied by morphometric variables and sex, but the type of relative growth was principally isometric and negative allometry. Biometric characteristics in Menippe frontalis A. Milne-Edwards, 1879 did not show abrupt changes in the relative growth. The threshold was not assumed as an indicator of morphometric sexual maturity however, they may be used for establishing legal minimum size in M. frontalis.
