Allotypy of Rabbit Serum Proteins

Abstract: The injection into one rabbit (with Freund's adjuvants) of a specific precipitate made with antibodies from the serum of another rabbit is usually followed by the appearance in the serum of the first rabbit of antibodies which precipitate the serum of certain rabbits but not of others. It was found that the antigen (or one of the antigens) concerned in the reaction of these anti rabbit serum antibodies with rabbit sera had an antibody function, and was therefore a protein. It was concluded that at least one se… Show more

“…Well delineated isoantibodies have been produced by Oudin (20)(21)(22) and others (23)(24)(25) by deliberately immunizing individual rabbits with ~'-globulin obtained from rabbits of differing "}'-globulin "allotype" (20). The serum of such isoimmunized rabbits bears a strong similarity to that of patients with rheumatoid factor; namely, specificity for a genetically determined ~,-globulin not present in the immunized rabbit.…”

“…Such specificity would considerably strengthen the antibody concept and perhaps throw light on the hypothesis that the rheumatoid factors represent autoantibodies directed against the patient's own type of v-globulin. Recent work by Oudin, Dray, and others have indicated a wide variety of antigenically different v-globulins in different individuals of the same species (20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25). A modification (26) of the test system of Waller and Vaughan, utilizing incomplete Rh antibodies from single donors as a test system for rheumatoid factors, has been primarily employed in the present investigation (27).…”

“…As may be seen in Table I, the phenotype of the rabbits chosen for the production of the immunizing and of the anti-idiotypic immune sera were such that the attempts of anti-idiotypic immunization could not lead to the appearance of antibodies against known allotypic patterns of the a or b groups. 4 In one case, however, an error in recording the allotypic phenotypes resulted in the immunization of an Aal-rabbit (2-40) with bacteria agglutinated by the antiserum of an Aal + rabbit . This immunization resulted in the appearance of anti-Aal antibodies together with anti-idiotypic antibodies.…”

“…In the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.), serologically defined polymorphisms have been described for both the H chain and L chain (1,2). As in other species, Hand L-chain polymorphisms segregate as unlinked codominant Mendelian alleles.…”
