Allure of the "Crystal: Myths and Metaphors in Architectural Morphogenesis

Abstract: 'Form' has always been one of the most important issues in architectural design. In the process of form-giving to the end-product, architects make use of different sources from typologies to intuitions or metaphorical ones. When the generic ideas of the prominent examples in architectural history have been traced, it can clearly be stated that one of the most effective metaphors used in architecture is the 'Crystal.' Appearing at the intersections between nature and human history and having a long history goin… Show more

“…This was mainly attributed to the diversity of functions that need to be accommodated and provided within the allowable space, including administrative, services and recreational spaces. These challenges were highlighted through different studies in the relevant literature (Arge, 2005;Eyüce and Eyüce, 2010;Remøy and van der Voordt, 2014;Wilkinson et al, 2014). This prompted the A/E team to define the spatial requirements, and accordingly, identify their corresponding locations and distribution in the floor plans.…”

“…Eyüce and Eyüce (2010) discussed the context of the adaptive reuse design, from the design professional perspective. The study highlighted that adaptive reuse projects entail the implementation of substantial changes in the space configuration, as reconfiguring the building layout efficiently to embody the new functional requirements is one of the key challenges in these projects.…”

“…At present, architectural and spatial research is actively conducted in the field of modeling a multidimensional, changeable, illusory and metaphorical architectural object. Silvetti [1], Eyuce [2], Ozgan Yazgan, and Akalin [3], Ivanova [4], Dutsev [5], Vytuleva [6], etc analyzed the hidden and changing meanings of architecture, metaphors and illusions in architectural morphogenesis. Technologies of digital algorithms make it possible to use self-forming and self-transforming matter, which begins to exist in its own digital quasi-space.…”

“…Günçe and Mısırlısoy (2019) emphasize on the reuse of buildings from the users' view and experience as an essential aspect. Thus, as a part of an architectural program, identification of users' requirements is an important issue in AR projects; and the ability to fulfill the requirements indicates the project's functional feasibility (Rockow et al , 2019; Beck, 2014; Eyüce and Eyüce, 2010). This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by proposing guidelines based on the evaluation of indicators from hotel guests' perspectives and classifying them into principal components for more user-friendly boutique hotels through a postoccupancy evaluation (POE) study.…”
