ALOS-2 polarimetric SAR observation of Hokkaido-Iburi-Tobu earthquake 2018

Abstract: This paper reports prompt space-borne ALOS-2 SAR observation results of Hokkaido-Iburi-Tobu earthquake on 2018/09/06. Emphasis is placed on quick survey for disaster monitoring using fully polarimetric data. On 2018/09/08, ALOS-2 has acquired data over the disaster area. By comparison of the previous data (2017/08/26) before the earthquake, damaged areas by landslides are clearly detected. The analysis is based on the scattering power decomposition, which retrieves scattering mechanism change from bare soil su… Show more

“…The polarimetric target decompositions is a modern and robust technique for extraction more details of physical characterizes ground objects based on scattering mechanism. There are many decomposition methods that this research used the most common decomposition method (Dabboor et al, 2019;Nielsen et al, 2019b;Yamaguchi et al, 2019). These methods include Cloude, Freeman, Touzi, Yamaguchi four-component, and H/A/α decompositions.…”

“…Among the type of RS Sensors the SAR sensors, due to operating independently of weather and daylight play role in RS analysis and widely used in many applications such as CD (Marinelli et al, 2017). Recently, with increasing available to polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data using them convert to hot topic among researchers in many application such as: classification, CD, and target detection (Dabboor et al, 2019;Nielsen et al, 2019a;Sabry and Ainsworth, 2019;Silva et al, 2019;Yamaguchi et al, 2019). This data could be obtained in four different channel as VV (Vertical transmit and Vertical receive), HH (Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive), VHVertical transmit and Horizontal receive), and HV (Horizontal transmit and Vertical receive) (Najafi et al, 2019).…”

“…Recently, there have been several attempts to develop similar SAR-based change detection methods for rapid landslide mapping based on SAR amplitude Suga, 2018, 2019;Mondini et al, 2019), coherence Olen and Bookhagen, 2018;Yun et al, 2015) or some combination of these (Aimaiti et al, 2019;Jung and Yun, 2019) or based on polarimetric SAR methods (e.g. Yamaguchi et al, 2019). However, with the exception of Mondini et al (2019), who used a global selection of landslides, these studies are generally tested on a single landslide event and use a single radar sensor.…”

“…1). This earthquake drew significant attentions to a number of landslides in the epicentral region (Yamagishi and Yamazaki 2018;Yamaguchi et al 2019), liquefaction in residential areas in Sapporo and other cities (Hirose et al 2018;Karimzadeh and Matsuoka 2018;Kuwahara et al 2018), and blackout in the whole Hokkaido Island (Ozaki et al 2019). An overview of casualties, damages and government responses was reported by Takahashi and Kimura (2019).…”
