“…Genetic testing for both thalassemias is recommended in areas where malaria was endemic, as in some regions of Italy like Sardinia, but also in regions of Italy where internal immigrations from regions with high incidence of thalassemias or immigrations from developing countries where hemoglobinopathies are more frequent, particularly from Mediterranean area, Indian Sub‐Continent and South‐East Asia, were increased in the last decades, like Lombardy.
