Alterations in Auditory Middle Latency Evoked Potentials During Meditation on a Meaningful Symbol–“OM”

Abstract: Middle latency auditory evoked potentials were recorded in 18 male volunteers with ages between 25 and 45 years, 9 of whom had more than 10 years of experience in "Om" meditation (senior subjects), whereas the other 9 had no meditation experience (naive subjects). Both groups were studied in two types of sessions. “…This principle is made practical by knitting yoga postures interspersed with periods of supine relaxation and has been shown to provide deeper degree of rest than simple supine rest or the commonly used meditative techniques. 50 Novelty, limitations and suggestions for future work This is the first RCT that has looked at cognitive functions after yoga practice in climacteric. An objective measure, serum FSH level, was used as the inclusion criterion rather than only the subjective symptoms of menopausal rating scale.…”

“…After the practice of certain Yoga techniques such as Om chanting or Ujjayi Pranayama enhancement of auditory information processing has been reported at mesencephalic and diencephalic levels, as measured by middle latency auditory evoked potentials [63]. Yogasana and Pranayama practices have also been found to improve visual perception [64,65].…”
