Glaucoma is a common condition that relies on careful clinical assessment to diagnose and determine disease progression. There is growing evidence that glaucoma is associated not only with loss of retinal ganglion cells but also with degeneration of cortical and subcortical brain structures associated with vision and eye movements. The effect of glaucoma pathophysiology on eye movements is not well understood. In this review, we examine the evidence surrounding altered eye movements in glaucoma patients compared to healthy controls, with a focus on quantitative eye tracking studies measuring saccades, fixation, and optokinetic nystagmus in a range of visual tasks. The evidence suggests that glaucoma patients have alterations in several eye movement domains. Patients exhibit longer saccade latencies, which worsen with increasing glaucoma severity. Other saccadic abnormalities include lower saccade amplitude and velocity, and difficulty inhibiting reflexive saccades. Fixation is pathologically altered in glaucoma with reduced stability. Optokinetic nystagmus measures have also been shown to be abnormal. Complex visual tasks (eg reading, driving, and navigating obstacles), integrate these eye movements and result in behavioral adaptations. The review concludes with a summary of the evidence and recommendations for future research in this emerging field.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease that is dependent on Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) and associated with risk factors related to reduced ocular blood flow (OBF). In clinical practice, it is instrumental to update and review the considerable evidence of the current imaging technologies utilized in the investigation of OBF involved in both the onset and progression of glaucoma. Bibliographic databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar, were searched for articles on OBF techniques published between 2018 and 2023 using keywords such as “ocular blood flow”, “glaucoma”, “invasive ocular blood flow measurement”, and “non-invasive ocular blood flow measurement”. All types of methodologies were considered, except for editorials, letters to the editor, and animal studies. This review provides comprehensive information on the recent state-of-the-art imaging innovations used to monitor and measure the ocular blood flow in glaucoma.

Trends in research related to ophthalmic microperimetry from 1992 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis and knowledge graph study

BackgroundMicroperimetry is a novel technology to assess macular function. The aim of the study was to explore the global research status and trends in microperimetry.MethodsDocuments related to microperimetry in ophthalmology from 1992 to 2022 were extracted from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) database of the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC). Raw data were analyzed using the VOSviewer and CiteSpace software. Bibliometric parameters included annual publication quantity, countries, authors, journals, international cooperation, and keywords.ResultsA total of 1,217 peer-reviewed documents were retrieved. Annual research output has increased significantly since 2005, especially since 2013. Holz F, Rubin G, and Guymer R contributed most to the number of articles published about microperimetry. Rubin G, Fitzke F, and Holz F, respectively, received the most citations for their study. The countries publishing most were the USA, Italy, and the UK, while the USA, the UK, and Germany received the most citation frequency. Univ Bonn, UCL, and Moorfields Eye Hosp were the top three productive institutions for microperimetry research in the world. The top three journals that publish articles about microperimetry were Retina-The Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, and the American Journal of Ophthalmology. The top 10 common keywords included microperimetry, optical coherence tomography, eye, retinal sensitivity, macular degeneration, fundus autofluorescence, scanning laser ophthalmoscope, visual acuity, sensitivity, and degeneration. Keywords “optical coherence tomography angiography,” “retinitis pigmentosa,” and “internal limiting membrane” burst in the last 3 years.ConclusionThe bibliometric and knowledge graph analysis of research status and trends in microperimetry provided global researchers with valuable information to propose future cooperation and track cutting-edge progress.
