“…Out of the seven included studies investigating eight samples, two studies analyzed spectral power in individuals with BN (Léonard, Pepinà, Bond, & Treasure, ; Wolz et al, ), three studies investigated individuals with BED (Imperatori et al, ; Tammela et al, ; Wolz et al, ), and three studies investigated individuals with obesity only (Bauer & Manning, ; Hume, Howells, Karpul, et al, ; Hume, Howells, Rauch, Kroff, & Lambert, ). All characteristics of included studies are summarized in Table .…”

“…Two studies investigated adults with BED and co‐morbid obesity (American Psychiatric Association, ; Imperatori et al, ; Tammela et al, ), and one study investigated women with BED across the weight range (Wolz et al, ). In one study, BED was determined via a semistructured expert interview according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)‐5 criteria (Wolz et al, ), and two studies (Imperatori et al, ; Tammela et al, ) used a self‐report questionnaire ( Binge Eating Scale [BES]; Gormally, Black, Daston, & Rardin, ). Imperatori et al () derived the resting‐state EEG eyes closed for 5 min at 32 standard positions (10–20 system), after a 4‐ to 6‐hr fast.…”

“…There were no other differences between the groups in the EEG findings, although eating disorders have been reported to be associated with EEG abnormalities in obese patients [45,46]. Furthermore, one study indicated that obese participants without eating disorders showed poor alpha desynchronization [47].…”

“…Binging usually includes highly palatable foods that are typically characterized by high calorie density and low nutritional values (Oswald et al, 2011; Bekker et al, 2014; Boggiano et al, 2014; Pool et al, 2015) and it is often accompanied by a sense of loss of control in humans (Finlayson et al, 2011; APA, 2013; Boggiano et al, 2014, 2015; Dalton and Finlayson, 2014; Pool et al, 2015) which is triggered by emotional stressors (Boggiano et al, 2007, 2014, 2015; Bello et al, 2014; Pool et al, 2015). Food consumption while binging is not necessarily driven by hunger and therefore it increases various health risks (Finlayson et al, 2011; APA, 2013; Bekker et al, 2014; Boggiano et al, 2015; Imperatori et al, 2015; Pool et al, 2015). Behavioral, emotional, and cognitive properties of BE are seen in 10–20% of the general population (Dalton and Finlayson, 2014).…”
