Alterations of Tooth Eruption and Growth in Pups Suckling from Diabetic Dams

Abstract: Several studies have confirmed a decrease in the quality and quantity of milk of mothers with diabetes during lactation. However, it remains unclear how maternal diabetes affects the offspring specifically during lactation. The aim of this study was to evaluate body and mandibular growth and tooth eruption in pups suckling from diabetic dams. The study was performed on 13 Wistar rat pups that were born to dams that were subjected to experimental diabetes on the day of parturition. Body weight and body size wer… Show more

“…There is now substantial evidence from epidemiological studies and animal models indicating that diabetes mellitus affects tooth development including tooth eruption and enamel mineralization78910. However, understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms though which in utero hyperglycaemia alters this process is lacking.…”

“…A number of epidemiological studies have demonstrated that in utero exposure to maternal hyperglycaemia, induced by GDM, has detrimental effects on cardiovascular and urinary system development, and is linked to obesity and associated metabolic complications in the offspring23456. Moreover, epidemiologic and animal model studies have shown that hyperglycaemia alters the tooth development process, affecting tooth eruption and mineralization78910. However, the effects of maternal diabetes on tooth development, and the associated underlying mechanisms have not been thoroughly investigated.…”

“…There are many organ systems in the offspring that can be affected by maternal diabetes, such as the nerve system, cardiovascular system and urinary system . Previous studies have also indicated that maternal diabetes affects offspring tooth development . However, the pathological mechanisms by which it induces abnormal tooth development in the offspring are not fully understood.…”

“…Maternal diabetes is also associated with altered offspring tooth development. Epidemiological and animal models have demonstrated that maternal diabetes affects the tooth developmental process by impairing tooth eruption and mineralization, and altering tooth dimensions . However, the mechanisms by which maternal diabetes affects tooth development have not yet been well investigated.…”

“…Os ganhos de pesos médios no período, referentes aos grupos controle e tratados foram comparados usando ANOVA e teste de comparação de pares de médias de Student-Newman-Keuls. Villarino et al (2005) avaliaram alterações no crescimento de filhotes de ratas diabéticas. Os filhotes foram pesados diariamente ao longo de 21 dias de lactação, sendo apresentado o gráfico dos perfis médios de crescimento dos grupos controle e tratado.…”
