Alternative Assessment Practices of a Classroom Teacher: Alignment with Reform-Based Science Curriculum

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore alignment between reform-based Turkish primary science curriculum and alternative assessment practices of a classroom teacher. Observational case study approach was utilized. A classroom teacher with 32 years of experience and his 31 students participated in the study. The data were collected during one academic year via classroom observations, teacher interviews, instructional materials and a science teaching belief instrument. Analysis of the data indicated that the t… Show more

“…Even without teacher-training, engineering faculty members teach courses to students, assess and evaluate students' performance in a course. Inadequate teacher-training on assessment practices is found to be a key element, which can have a negative influence on students' course content learning (Serin, 2015).…”

“…Burter (2000) expresses that formulating measurable learning outcomes and assessing students' performances are sophisticated activities with which most engineering faculty members have had little or no experience (p.4). In this regard, Serin (2015) argues there is a need for high-quality teacher-training in instructional design and assessment practices.…”

“…Furthermore, the study contains multiple data sources, which researchers have identified as the unique power of the case study research design (Yin, 2009). Case study design is also used by many researchers to investigate teachers" assessment literacies (e.g., Barendsen & Henze, 2017;Lyon, 2011;Serin, 2015).…”

“…Furthermore, having sophisticated understanding and practices of classroom assessment is crucial for making informed instructional decisions to support desired learning (Abell & Siegel, 2011;NRC, 2014;Mertler & Campbell, 2005). Yet, research efforts have shown that it is difficult to change teachers" traditional understanding of classroom assessment, and changing teachers" classroom assessment practices is much more difficult (Ateh, 2015;Abell & Siegel, 2011;Black & Wiliam, 2006;Herman, Osmundson, Dai, Ringstaff, & Timms, 2015;Ruiz-Primo & Furtak, 2007, Serin, 2015. Thus, it is crucial to prepare assessment literate teachers and support them during their induction years, where most teachers face difficulties to transform their knowledge into classroom practice to both assess scientific knowledge and practices at the same time, as required by the Next Generation Science Standards (NRC, 2012).…”

“…The rapid development of science, along with lifestyle changes, calls for constant adaptation of the education system. Many authors (Alpaslan, Yalvac, & Loving, 2015;Pinar, 2013;Serin, 2015, Kapanadze, & Eilks, 2014 have analysed curriculum reforms from countries around the world. Dillon (2009) made an overview of curriculum reforms, from the scientific point of view.…”
