This study aims to identify and compare the key social, economic and environmental sustainability practices in the leather industry. Content analysis was used to analyse extracted sustainability information from either the website, annual report, sustainability report or corporate social responsibility report of six leather-related companies. Review of existing literature assisted in categorising different practices under social, economic and environmental sustainability, while an identification of patterns among practices followed. Findings reveal that companies are observing a good practice of either dedicating a section of their website to revealing their sustainability activities or utilising their sustainability reports or annual reports. Energy efficiency, waste management and reduction of greenhouse gases emission were the most occurring environmental sustainability practices. Health and safety occurred as the dominant social sustainability practice, while economic sustainability practices have not been well defined, providing an opportunity for future research. The study provides a useful resource for managers and companies in the leather supply chain to learn from brands that have been embarking on sustainability efforts and assist them to a better understanding of the concept, in readiness for strategy formulation, implementation and reporting.

Comúnmente los residuos industriales son dispuestos en vertederos o destinados para incineración, perdiendo con esto su uso potencial como materias primas en la fabricación de nuevos materiales. Las industrias del caucho y del cuero son consideradas como algunas de las más contaminantes a nivel mundial, sin embargo la industria del caucho ha demostrado su interés en el desarrollo de compuestos que involucren el uso de materiales clasificados como de desecho. Esta revisión abarca de manera general algunas características de residuos de cuero posindustrial, producidos durante el proceso de curtido químico con sales de cromo y los procesos de desbaste, así como las características y conceptos básicos para el análisis de compuestos de caucho aditivados con residuos de cuero. El tamaño de las partículas de cuero y su característica acida juegan un papel importante en los procesos de vulcanización y en las propiedades fisicoquímicas de los compuestos de caucho mezclados con este residuo posindustrial. La adición de residuos de cuero posindustrial genera en el caucho un efecto reforzante que puede ser aprovechado para aplicaciones en productos de mayor dureza que los cauchos no reforzados, sin embargo estos residuos generan una disminución en la capacidad de elongación del material.

Collagen structure changes during chrome tanning in propylene carbonate

Green solvents, such as propylene carbonate (PC), can be used in leather processing to improve the efficiency of chrome tanning and reduce wastewater. Here we report a combined small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) study on PC and its efficacy as a carrier medium during chrome tanning. SAXS analysis on the collagen structure of chrome tanned leather using PC, compared to conventionally tanned leather using water, showed an increase in Cr uptake in addition to the more uniform penetration of Cr through the leather cross-section. The increased binding of Cr to the collagen matrix drives the decreased hydration environment of the collagen triple helix. Furthermore, DSC studies show a uniform hydrothermal stability for the PC samples due to the more even distribution of Cr through the collagen matrix. Understanding the mechanisms by which chrome tanning occurs in non-aqueous solvents can guide us towards a more sustainable future for the leather industry.
