Alternative proteins as fish meal substitution in diets for largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides): a mini review

Abstract: SummaryAquaculture has been challenged to explore alternative proteins to develop efficient feed formulations that foster a sustainable future growth. Largemouth bass (LMB) are economically important cultured fish with a high demand for protein. One of the traditional ingredients used to develop protein diets is fish meal (FM). With the aquaculture industry expanding, the FM price climbs with broadening the imbalance between the supply and requirement. Hence, there is a requisite to explore novel alternative p… Show more

“…22 However, in many countries, especially in China, the production of soybean meal is insufficient to meet the animal husbandry demands. Based on the growing demand for soybean meal, fully exploiting existing high-quality protein feed resources such as cottonseed meal, canola meal, corn gluten meal, sunflower meal, pea protein, fish meal, etc, 7,22,23 and adopting advanced feed scientific theories and processing techniques is essential to promote sustainable animal husbandry.…”

“…However, the increasing global demand and the overfishing of wild fish stocks have restricted supply and increased the price of FM in recent decades [9]. Therefore, several studies were carried out to explore the alternatives of FM in fish feeds, including plant protein, animal protein, and single-cell protein [8,10].…”
