Abstract: Hemorrhage and anemia represent a common cause of preventable death. 1 Although the exact number of deaths due to hemorrhage is unknown, at least 5 million people worldwide die every year from trauma-related injuries, with roughly 40% of those deaths estimated to be secondary to bleeding or its sequelae. 1,2 Bleeding accounts for 25% of maternal fatalities in Africa and 3 50-80% of pediatric sickle cell anemia patients in Africa die before the age of five, often without access to adequate blood. 4
