Alternative use of tobacco as a sustainable crop for seed oil, biofuel, and biomass

Abstract: Tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum, is an industrial crop traditionally used for manufacturing cigarettes. However, due to restriction of European subsidies, an alternative use of tobacco is needed, such as biofuel or biomass. Tobacco is indeed an oilseed crop with an oil yield ranging from 30 to 40 % of seed dry weight. Yet, there is still little information on the cultivation of tobacco for seed oil production. Here, we tested tobacco cultivation as an oilseed crop in Central Italy, where flue-cured tobacco is tradi… Show more

“…Tobacco seed-type FAD2 genes could be used as the target for seed fatty acid profile engineering Due to the high oil content, tobacco seed was proposed to be a promising feedstock for biodiesel production [2,4,9]. However, the high linoleic acid content of tobacco seed oil is problematic from the perspective of oxidative stability, which is important for industrial applications [1,3].…”

“…Feedstock supply is one of the main limiting factors for biodiesel production. A high seed yield tobacco variety (Solaris) had been generated for seed oil production [9]. Life cycle analysis indicates that the production of Solaris tobacco biodiesel creates impacts that are similar to those that have been identified in biodiesel production from other crops [10].…”

“…São 154 mil produtores integrados, com aproximadamente 615 mil pessoas participando do ciclo produtivo do tabaco no meio rural [14]. Os cultivos agrícolas de tabaco também possuem potencial para prover recursos a outras atividades, tais como a produção de biomassa e biocombustíveis [15].…”

“…Furthermore, due to the rich carbohydrates, wide availability, and low cost, tobacco stalk could also be used for biofuel production [7]. Recently, a high seed yield tobacco variety, Solaris, had been bred by the Sunchem Holding Company for seed lipid feedstock production [8]. Life cycle analysis showed that the impacts created by the production of Solaris tobacco biodiesel were similar to those from other biodiesel plants [9].…”
