Altred Fructosamine and Lipid Fractions in Subclinical Hypothyroidism

Abstract: Background: Thyroid function disorders lead to changes in the lipoprotein metabolism. Objectives: To study the lipid and the glycaemic abnormalities in the subclinical hypothyroidism cases and to compare the same with the euthyroid, overt hypothyroid and the hyperthyroid subjects.Methodology: Four groups, euthyroid (Group-I), hypothyroid (Group-II), subclinical hypothyroid (Group-III) and hyperthyroid (Group-IV), which consisted of 30 subjects each, of either sex, who were aged 25-55 years, underwent Fasting Pl… Show more

“…We excluded patients with thyroid disorders because serum protein turnover is lower in hypothyroidism and higher in hyperthyroidism, which leads to increased and decreased protein glycation respectively. 29 , 30 We also excluded patients with protein-losing disorders. Hence, the rates of serum protein turnover and glycation in the study participants were likely to be occurring at steady states.…”

“…BMI is also negatively associated with fructosamine in those without diabetes and falls during pregnancy , further complicating its interpretation. Thyroid status may affect fructosamine interpretation , however, not necessarily independently of deranged glucose and protein metabolism .…”
