Aluminum‐borate‐whiskers‐reinforced bismaleimide composites. 1: preparation and properties

Abstract: Aluminum‐borate‐whiskers‐reinforced bismaleimide (BMI/Al18B4O33) composites were prepared, and the mechanical and thermal properties were investigated. Results show that the coupling agent used for surface treatment of whiskers has a great effect on the properties of these materials. Composites containing surface‐untreated whiskers, or silane‐compound‐KH 921‐treated whiskers, exhibited initially only a slight increase in the flexural strength when the whiskers weight content increased up to 5 wt%; thereafter, … Show more

“…The 4,4 0 -bismaleimidodiphenyl methane (BDM) (mp ¼ 156-1588C) was provided by the Northwestern Chemical Engineering Institute (China), o,o 0 -diallyl bisphenol A (DBA) was supplied by Northwestern Polytechnical University (China). Al 18 B 4 O 33 whiskers were obtained from Qihai Haixing Science and Technology Development (China), which was used as received, or surface treated by borate (designed as BE4, and its chemical structure is shown in Scheme 1) as described in previous literature, 22 the surface treated whiskers were coded as Al 18 B 4 O 33 (BE4) whiskers. The copper foil and the E-glass fiber cloth were supported by Ventec Copper Clad Laminates (China).…”

“…It is known that there is a Michael reaction between the maleimide and -NH 2 groups (ESI †), 26 and several diamine modified BMI resin systems have been developed for commercial applications. 27 Therefore, the -NH 2 group is designed to be introduced in the molecule of the new hyperbranched polysiloxane.…”

“…The concentrated product was cooled to 4°C, and then microcrystallites were precipitated from the cool solution. The crystal was separated by filtration, washed with acetone and dried in vacuum to afford cubic octameric silicate anion, (Me 4 N) 8 Si 8 O 20 , coded as D4R. 5-10 ml methanolic solution of D4R (2 g) was added dropwise to a mixture of dimethyldichlorosilane (2 ml), hexane (30 ml) and dimethylformamide (50 ml) with vigorous stirring in an ice bath.…”

“…In fact, developing high performance insulators based on BMI resin has been one of the hottest topics in recent years. Some kinds of inorganic fillers have been used to prepare BMI resin matrix composites [6][7][8][9], of them mesoporous silica has attracted considerable interests owing to its highly ordered and uniform mesoporosity [10] as well as extremely low dielectric constant (1.4-2.1) [11][12][13][14]. However, present mesoporous silica mainly consists of Si-O-Si like zeolite, showing brittleness and poor interaction with organic polymers, and thus can not significantly improve the integrated performance of original polymers.…”
