Alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction: a Bayesian Network meta‐analysis of grafting materials efficacy on prevention of bone height and width reduction

Abstract: On the basis of the results of the present analysis, socket grafting seems to be more favourable than unassisted socket healing. Moreover, Bayesian Network meta-analysis indicates that freeze-dried bone graft plus membrane is the most likely effective in the reduction of bone height remodelling. Autologous bone marrow resulted the most likely effective when width remodelling was considered. Studies with larger samples and less risk of bias should be conducted in the future in order to further strengthen the re… Show more

“…A similar width reduction with ridge preservation surgery (ranging from 1.14 to 2.5 mm) was reported in a meta‐analysis by Iocca et al. in 2017 . This reduction of dimensional change can be clinically important considering that ridge width shrinkage following tooth extraction alone can result in losses of 2.46 to 4.5 mm.…”

“…The proper application of biomaterials can be determined by the defect situation and size. Regarding contained defects, including sinus floor elevations or extraction sockets, all biomaterials, synthetic, bovine and allogenic, function quite predictably . However, onlay augmentations with missing bone walls are of greater complexity, especially when more than one tooth is missing.…”

“…Therefore, treatment planning should include consideration of maintaining alveolar ridge dimension, which is called alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) . Several systematic reviews and meta‐analyses have demonstrated that ARP significantly reduces ridge shrinkage compared to natural socket healing . However, there is substantial heterogeneity in the surgical methods and materials used for ARP …”

“…The effect of this bone substitute on ARP has been demonstrated clinically, radiographically, and histologically . A recent Bayesian network meta‐analysis even demonstrated that freeze‐dried bone graft with a membrane shows superior effectiveness in the reduction of bone height remodeling compared with other modalities …”
