Ambipolar organic phototransistors with bulk heterojunction films of p-type and n-type indacenodithienothiophene-containing conjugated polymers

Abstract: We report ambipolar organic phototransistors with the polymeric sensing channel layers that consist of p-type and n-type indacenodithienothiophene (IDTT)-based conjugated polymers. The p-type IDTT-based polymer, poly(5,5,11,11-tetrakis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophene-2-yl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2’3’-d’]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b’]dithiophene-co-5,6-bis(octyloxy)benzo[c]-[1,2,5]thiadiazole) (PIDTT-80BT), was synthesized by...

“…Thus, they can be applied in NIR phototransistors (OPTs), which can convert NIR light into electrical signals to realize the detection of NIR light. 2,[7][8][9] Although D-A copolymers have been intensively investigated in photodetector applications, [10][11][12][13][14] there are only a handful of instances that can achieve high NIR-OPT performances.…”

“…[14][15][16][17][18] To date, most OPTRs with conjugated polymers have been reported to work in a p-channel operation mode of transistors because of the channel layers consisting of p-type conjugated polymers that are relatively easy to synthesize. [19][20][21][22][23] However, n-channel mode OPTRs have been less reported owing to the relatively small number of n-type conjugated polymers that are available via synthesis. [24][25][26] Interestingly, ambipolar OPTRs, which can be operated in both p-channel and n-channel modes, have been rarely reported despite their versatility suitable for any type of semiconductor operation system.…”

“…[27][28][29] Compared with the complicated synthetic routes of enlarging the conjugation length, the D-A alternating structures feature concise synthetic routes and adjustable energy levels using different building blocks. 30 Besides the NIR absorption, D-A alternating structures have strong intermolecular interactions induced by the tight p-p stacking and electrostatic interaction, which are conducive to charge transport. 31,32 Although some studies on D-A type organic semiconductors in NIR photodetectors have been reported before, 30,[33][34][35][36][37][38][39] there are few examples that can achieve high NIR OPT performance.…”
