Amburana cearensis: Pharmacological and Neuroprotective Effects of Its Compounds

Abstract: Amburana cearensis A.C. Smith is an endemic tree from Northeastern Brazil used in folk medicine as teas, decocts and syrups for the treatment of various respiratory and inflammatory diseases, since therapeutic properties have been attributed to compounds from its stem bark and seeds. Numerous pharmacological properties of semi-purified extracts and isolated compounds from A. cearensis have been described in several biological systems, ranging from antimicrobial to anti-inflammatory effects. Some of these activ… Show more

“…was the most versatile species, whose barks (stem) and seeds were indicated for the treatment of seven diseases (chickenpox, infantile colic, inflammation in general, tooth eruptions, the flu, antipyretic and expectorant), with scientifically proven uses, as stated by Canuto (2008). Silva et al (2020) state that coumarins, a chemical constituent naturally present in various parts of the plant, known pharmacologically as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory drugs, also have a neuroprotective function, due to their ability to reduce oxidative stress, inflammation and neuronal death. Agra (1996) also adds that it is threatened with extinction in areas of Caatinga, due to exploitation for timber purposes in the region of Cariris Velhos/CE.…”

“…A large number of plant species are now being used in cancer treatment or prevention. Accumulating evidence suggests that plant species have anticancer properties (Alam et al, 2016;Greenwell & Rahman, 2015;Islam et al, 2015;Martínez et al, 2020;Silva et al, 2020). Approximately 35,000 plants have been assessed for possible anticancer activities by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and of these, about 3,000 plant species have shown reproductive anticancer activity (Desai et al, 2008;Iqbal et al, 2020;Vieira et al, 2020).…”
