Ameloblastoma: an aggressive lesion of the mandible

Abstract: Ameloblastoma is a benign locally invasive epithelial odontogenic tumour comprising 1% of all tumours and cysts arising in the jaws. It is commonly found in the third and fourth decade in the molar ramus region of the mandible. Among all types of ameloblastoma, multicystic ameloblastoma is believed to be locally aggressive lesion that has the tendency for recurrence. In this report we present a large multicystic ameloblastoma in the left body-ramus region of the mandible in a 55-year-old woman. This large lesi… Show more

“…Epidemiology and prevalence-Although ameloblastomas occur with equal frequency in both genders they are found slightly in higher frequency in women than men4 as seen in our case. In the ameloblastoma of the mandible, the majority (70%) are located in the molar ramus region and 10-15% are found in association with an un erupted tooth 5,9 . Outcome and recurrence-The chance of recurrence seems to be more dependent on the method of surgical treatment.11 In general, annual follow-up for at least 10 years is recommended.…”

“…As the lesion was extensive with the history of recurrence, hemimandibulectomy was performed along with reconstruction plate( Figure. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. And the patient is kept on follow up (Figure 14…”

“…In the 1992 WHO also classified ameloblastoma as a benign but locally invasive epithelial odontogenic tumor. 5,[8][9][10] Clinical manifestations of ameloblastoma usually grow in all directions, invading soft tissue and destroying bone either by direct pressure or by triggering bone resorption by osteoclasts. 5 Ameloblastoma does not cause pain, slow growth with a large mass.…”

“…В связи с этим рекомендации ученых включают пятилетнее динамическое наблюдение за про-оперированными больными с частотой раз в год и после окончания пяти лет -с частотой раз в два года, до 25 лет после операции. [14]. Такой длительный период наблюде-ния показан в связи с тем, что имеются данные о рециди-вах амелобластомы через 20-45 лет [15].…”
