American cranberries and health benefits – an evolving story of 25 years

Abstract: Cranberries contain various types of bioactive components. Scientists have been studying cranberries' beneficial effects on urinary tract health since the 20th century. In the 21st century, the protection provided by cranberry phytochemicals against cancer and vascular diseases has drawn more attention from researchers. Anthocyanins, procyanidins, and flavonols in cranberries were all documented to have potential effects on cancer prevention. The cardiometabolic effects of cranberries have been investigated in… Show more

“…Cranberry juice is known for its health-beneficial effects resulting from various pharmacological and biological properties, including hypolipidemic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticancer properties, and that is why it is sometimes called “superfruit” [33]. Cranberries are rich in vitamins and minerals, but they also contain phenolic compounds—hydroxycinnamic acid, caffeine, coumaric acid, and ferulic acid.…”

“…Phenolic compounds in the fruit of American cranberry are especially important for human health, as they, acting as natural antioxidants, protect the body from diseases that develop because of damage caused by oxidative stress, including such diseases as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, or age-related degenerative disorders [ 7 , 8 ]. The oligomeric flavan-3-ol complex in American cranberry fruit is equally important, as it has an antibacterial effect and prevents the adhesion of pathogenic microorganisms to the lining of the urinary tract, thus protecting the body from various bacterial diseases of the urinary bladder and the urinary tract [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Research has also proven that American cranberry fruit prevent ulcer formation by inhibiting the strains of the ulcer-causing bacteria Helicobacter pylori [ 12 ].…”

“…There is a vast amount of scientific literature suggesting that (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) is responsible for the majority of the potential health benefits attributed to green tea consumption. Catechins are found in many types of fruit, like apples (peel on), apricots, cherries, peaches, blackberries, black grapes, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries [ 88 - 90 ]. EGCG promotes apoptosis through the stabilization of p53, the regulation negative activity of NF-kB, activation of the caspase, the change in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the chymotrypsin-like activity of the 20S proteasome (purified) and the 26S proteasome in tumor cell lysates.…”
