American visceral leishmaniasis dissociated from Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera, Psychodidae) in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract: The occurrence of American visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil has always been associated with the presence of the Lutzomyia longipalpis vector. The geographic distribution of this vector in this state is related to the presence of specific geoclimatic characteristics, such as a dry climate, low elevations (< 450m), steep slopes and rocky outcrops. The occurrence of human autochthonous cases of American visceral leishmaniasis in municipalities without these geoclimatic characterist… Show more

“…In the current study, the species richness recorded in the peridomiciliary environment (i.e., the least conserved area) of the NMPC was in accordance with those of previous observations in the peridomiciliary environment of the Atlantic Forest, State of Espṍrito Santo (Pinto et al 2010a(Pinto et al , 2012aVirgens et al 2008). However, when we included in our analyses, specimens captured in the forested environment (i.e., the most conserved area) of the NMPC, the species richness increased signiÞcantly.…”

“…To establish the similarity among conservation units within the state of Espírito Santo, we used eight conservation areas as Operational Geographic Units (OGUs) (Crovello ) and sand fly species records were used as characters (Table ). The sand fly distribution data for the conservation units were compiled from Virgens et al (), Pinto et al (,), Pinto et al (,), Ferreira et al (), and Núcleo de Entomologia da Secretaria do Estado da Saúde do Espírito Santo (unpublished data). The conservation units can be grouped into three kinds using the elevation as a classification criterion: 1) highland conservation units (830 m a.s.l.])…”

“…The phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are the main leishmaniasis vectors along the Brazilian states situated on the Atlantic coast, such as the state of Espírito Santo. Historically, almost all the studies of sand fly fauna in this state were conducted in disturbed areas of endemic leishmaniasis regions as a result of the medical and veterinary importance of these flies (Barros et al , Ferreira et al , Pinto et al , Pinto et al ). Only recently, some studies were conducted in conservation units next to leishmaniasis endemic (Pinto et al ) or non‐endemic (Pinto et al ) areas.…”

“…Among other animals, chickens live in close contact with man and are attractive food sources for sandflies in Teresina. In this city, it is common practice to raise chickens 27,28,32,59 . Therefore, the connection between the domestic and sylvatic cycle of disease transmission may be facilitated by these farm birds.…”
