Amine decorated polystyrene nanobeads incorporating π-conjugated OPV chromophore for picric acid sensing in water

Abstract: A solution as well as solid state based sensor has been developed for selective detection of picric acid (PA) in water. Oligo (p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) incorporated polystyrene nanobeads (PS-OPV-NH 2 ) having an average size of 180 nm have been synthesized through miniemulsion polymerization. Amine (-NH 2 ) functionalization was performed on the nanobead surface to enhance the efficiency of the sensor among a library of other nitro-organics and library of cations and anions.Scheme 1 Schematics for synthesis … Show more

“…The red surface indicates nucleophilic (electron-rich) centers, while the blue surface represents electrophilic (elec- tron-deficient) centers. [26,27] The red coloring over the pyridinic nitrogen atoms of 1 signifies them as nucleophilic centers, potentially susceptible to coordination with metal ions. Additionally, Frontiers Molecular Orbital (FMO) analysis suggests that HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) orbitals predominantly concentrate on the central phenyl ring and the alkyl chains, while the LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) orbitals extend over the entire conjugated backbone.…”

“…A molecular electrostatic potential map analysis was conducted to identify the electrophilic and nucleophilic centers within the molecules (Figure 1b). The red surface indicates nucleophilic (electron‐rich) centers, while the blue surface represents electrophilic (electron‐deficient) centers [26,27] . The red coloring over the pyridinic nitrogen atoms of 1 signifies them as nucleophilic centers, potentially susceptible to coordination with metal ions.…”

“…Nanomaterials have been recently used for detecting explosives 49 . Nanomaterial in the form of quantum dots, quantum clusters, metal organic frameworks, carbon dots having fluorescent properties have been synthesized 50 . Because of their Nano size, they provide a large surface to volume ratio, and hence large surface area for detection of explosives 5 .…”

“…Organic optoelectronic materials are widely used these days because they have unique merits such as low cost and flexibility that traditional inorganic materials do not have [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Conjugated polymer is one of the most common organic optoelectronic materials [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Normally, conjugated polymer-based devices are produced in conjugated polymer solutions and the aggregation process can influence properties of these devices [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
