A novel dual-responsive supramolecular hydrogel composed of an azobenzene (AZO) endfunctionalized block copolymer PDMA-b-PNIPAM (AZO-(PDMA-b-PNIPAM)) and β-cyclodextrin-modified CdS quantum dot (β-CD@QD) has been demonstrated. Based on the host-guest inclusion complexation of AZO of the block copolymers and CD cavities on β-CD@QD, they form a hybrid inclusion complex (HIC). The HIC contains a QD as the core and the block copolymer as the shell with the PNIPAM block as the outer layer. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and UV-vis spectroscopy investigation proved the HIC structure in diluted solution. Hydrogel formed easily upon heating the aqueous solution of HIC at a concentration as low as 7 wt %; as a result of PNIPAM, aggregation occurred above the LCST. The inclusion complex and the domains of the collapsed PNIPAM chains serve as two distinct cross-links and render the hydrogel excellent dual sensitivity to competitive hosts/guests substitution and to temperature variation. Furthermore, rheology results quantitatively exhibit the hydrogel formation mechanism and the sol-to-gel reversibility following the two external stimuli.

Abstract-The stability and stoichiometric ratio of binary complexes among five fluorophores and b-cyclodextrin (b-CD) or heptakis-(6-amino-6-deoxy)-b-cyclodextrin (am-b-CD) were determined by means of fluorescence measurements in borate buffer at pH¼8.0 and 9.0. Structure of both host and guest affected the characteristics of the binary complexes. Pyrene and anthraquinone formed a 1:2 (fluorophore: cyclodextrin) complex with both cyclodextrins. Xanthone formed 1:1 complex with b-CD and 1:2 complex with am-b-CD. A more defined behaviour was observed for crysene. In fact, both stoichiometric different complexes were detected with both hosts. Only 1:1 complexes were observed for antracene. The complex stability was affected by the pH of the solution. MM2 calculations were performed in order to gain information about the forces working on the formation of complexes. q

Synthesis of β-cyclodextrin-Based Star Block Copolymers with Thermo-Responsive Behavior

Star polymers are one example of three-dimensional macromolecules containing several arms with similar molecular weight connected to a central core. Due to their compact structure and their enhanced segment density in comparison to linear polymers of the same molecular weight, they have attracted significant attention during recent years. The preparation of block-arm star copolymers with a permanently hydrophilic block and an "environmentally" sensitive block, which can change its nature from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, leads to nanometer-sized responsive materials with unique properties. These polymers are able to undergo a conformational change or phase transition as a reply to an external stimulus resulting in the formation of core-shell nanoparticles, which further tend to aggregate. Star-shaped copolymers with different cores were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The core-first method chosen as synthetic strategy allows good control over the polymer architecture. First of all the multifunctional initiators were prepared by esterification reaction of the hydroxyl groups with 2-chloropropionyl chloride. Using β-cyclodextrin as core molecules, which possess a well-defined number of functional groups up to 21, allows defining the number of arms per star polymer. In order to prepare stimuli-responsive multi-arm copolymers, containing a stimuli-responsive (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)) and a non-responsive block (poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAAm)), consecutive ATRP was carried out. The polymers were characterized intensively using NMR spectroscopy OPEN ACCESSPolymers 2015, 7 922 and size exclusion chromatography (SEC), whereas the temperature-depending aggregation behavior in aqueous solution was determined via turbidimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
