Amount of balance necessary for the independence of transfer and stair-climbing in stroke inpatients

Abstract: The calculated cut-off values indicated the amount of balance necessary for the independence of transfer and stair-climbing, with and without supervision, in stroke patients. Berg Balance Scale has a good discriminatory ability and cut-off values are clinically useful to determine the appropriate independence levels of transfer and stair-climbing in hospital wards. Implications for rehabilitation The Berg Balance Scale's (BBS) strong association with transfer and stair-climbing independence and performance ind… Show more

“…A previous report showed that the transfer score of the FIM was strongly associated with balance function [17]. Other studies have reported that the lower limbs play an important role in truncal support and control of sitting balance during forward movements, particularly with regard to the centre of gravity in a sitting position that occurs during wheelchair transfer [18,19].…”

“…Even though the median difference for the HIV-and HIV status unknown groups were double the median difference score of the HIV+ group, no difference was found among groups (p = 0.417). Previous studies have developed BBS cut-off scores associated with independence in various ADL (Fujita et al 2016(Fujita et al , 2017. These studies suggest that a BBS score of 40 indicates independence in functional walking ability in strokes; 41 indicates independent transfers; 42 indicates independent toileting; 44 indicates independent dressing; and 54 indicates independence in stair climbing (Fujita et al 2016(Fujita et al , 2017.…”

“…It is not clear what this individual improvement of the balance in OLST and TST means for the independence of patients after stroke in real everyday life. A recent study found a robust association of balance abilities measured with the Berg Balance Scale’s (BBS) with transfer and stair-climbing independence and performance [ 14 ]. The authors calculated cut-off values for independent transfer and stair-climbing for the BBS of 41/40 and 54/53 points, respectively [ 14 ].…”

“…A recent study found a robust association of balance abilities measured with the Berg Balance Scale’s (BBS) with transfer and stair-climbing independence and performance [ 14 ]. The authors calculated cut-off values for independent transfer and stair-climbing for the BBS of 41/40 and 54/53 points, respectively [ 14 ]. Our patients had BBS levels well below these limits, demonstrating the severity of our patients’ balance deficit in this study.…”
