AmpC- and Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase–Producing Enterobacteriaceae Detected in Fresh Produce in Central Ohio

Abstract: Salad vegetables purchased from farmer's markets and grocery stores in central Ohio during the summers of 2015 and 2016 were tested for the presence of Enterobacteriaceae resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems, Salmonella contamination, and coliform bacterial counts. A total of 364 samples were collected from 36 farmers' markets and 33 grocery stores. Using selective media, we found 23 (6.3%) samples that produced Enterobacteriaceae expressing an AmpC β-lactamase phenotype, with 11 (3.0%… Show more

“…On the American continent, different Enterobacteriaceae isolates harbored bla SHV , bla TEM and bla CTX-M-1 as well as bla CTX-M and bla CMY genes and were detected from iceberg lettuce and leafy greens, respectively in the United States [52,53]. Moreover, seven E. coli isolates carrying the bla CTX-M-15 gene were reported from leaf lettuce, alfalfa and parsley/cilantro in Ecuador [54], while bla CTX-M-14 , bla CTX-M-15 , bla CTX-M-27 , bla SHV-106 and bla SHV-142 -positive Enterobacteriaceae were reported in Canada from imported vegetable samples [55], and the bla CTX-M-15 gene in Brazil [56].…”

“…In another study in Croatia, L. monocytogenes was detected in only one sample (1%) of cut red cabbage (in a population of less than 100 CFU/g) during the analysis of 100 samples of RTE vegetables collected from supermarkets [71]. In another study in central Ohio (Columbus, OH, USA), in total, 364 samples of salad vegetables (leafy greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers) were collected from farmers' markets and grocery stores [72]. No Salmonella spp.…”
