Amphibians of varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil

Abstract: Despite the historical knowledge on amphibians of the Purus River basin, basic information on assemblages is fragmented, with gaps in knowledge existing at various scales, which limits conservation strategies. This study provides information on the composition, richness and abundance of the amphibian fauna in varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River between the Boca do Acre and Pauiní municipalities, Amazonas, Brazil. We sampled six oxbow lakes using forty-seven 200… Show more

“…The finding of a large number of species of the families Hylidae and Leptodactylidae was similar to the results of other studies and follows the pattern found in neotropical environments (Segalla et al 2016), including the Brazilian Amazon (Azevedo-Ramos and Galatti 2002, Neckel-Oliveira et al 2013, Ramalho et al 2016). In addition, three species of anurans (Pristimantis cf. ockendeni, Hyalinobatrachium iaspidiense and Scinax garbei ) are new records in the Amapá state (Silva e Silva and Costa-Campos 2014, Silva e Silva et al 2015, Silva e Silva and Costa-Campos 2016), evidence the incipience of knowledge in the regional context due to the lack of sampling.…”

“…High heterogeneity of macrophytes is expected in lentic environments (Moura J unior et al 2015) as oxbow lakes (Mormul et al 2013). The habitat heterogeneity formed by v arzeas and macrophyte rafts maintain the biodiversity (Wittmann et al 2006, von May & Donnelly 2009, Waldez et al 2013, Upton et al 2014, Ramalho et al 2016; however, it is poorly known in terms of beta diversity.…”
