Amplatzer vascular plug in renal artery embolization: case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Background: Arterial embolization constitutes a safe and effective therapeutic possibility in the treatment of numerous renal pathologies in election and in urgency. Over the years, numerous embolizing materials have been proposed: fibrin (temporary occlusion), glues, coils, and microspheres. The use of St. Jude Amplatzer vascular plug (AVP) constitutes a more recent and less widespread therapeutic choice, and its use in the renal district is not yet widespread although potentially very valid. Case presentatio… Show more

“…This RAE performed with AVP has growing potential and numerous advantages in terms of the time of the procedure, speed of embolization, and precision of occlusion. 14,15 The prospective randomized study showed pre-operative renal artery embolization to be a safe procedure with relatively low complications rate. To our experience, pre-operative renal artery embolization seemed to be a useful tool in surgical management of huge mass and advanced disease.…”

“…The literature advises obtaining preoperative imaging studies prior to embolization, such as CT scan or MRI, to better identify the unique anatomy and plan the intervention. Laboratory tests comprising of hemoglobin level, renal, cardiac, and hepatic function, and coagulation indexes are also essential [7] .…”

“…Treatment of obstructive azoospermia is usually surgical and involves the recovery of sperm through TESE and microTESE techniques. The advantages of interventional vascular radiology that allows minimally invasive treatments of the genitourinary system are described in the literature [ 22 , 23 ]; it allows the diagnosis and treatment of varicocele by endovascular scleroembolization [ 24 ]. However, there are no papers in the literature describing the treatment of obstructive oligozoospermia.…”
