Amplification with hearing aids for patients with tinnitus and co-existing hearing loss

Abstract: BackgroundTinnitus is described as the perception of sound or noise in the absence of real acoustic stimulation. In the current absence of a cure for tinnitus, clinical management typically focuses on reducing the effects of co-morbid symptoms such as distress or hearing loss. Hearing loss is commonly co-morbid with tinnitus and so logic implies that amplification of external sounds by hearing aids will reduce perception of the tinnitus sound and the distress associated with it. ObjectivesTo assess the effects… Show more

“…Subjective tinnitus is strongly associated with the presence of hearing impairment (Fowler, 1944;Hoare et al, 2014). It involves the perception of a sound without specific meaning (such as buzzing, hissing or ringing) in the absence of an external source and can thus be regarded as a simple form of auditory hallucination.…”

“…Hearing aids too, although a standard component of usual care, have little quality evidence of effectiveness for tinnitus [18,19] and are only suggested as an option to be considered in the clinical guidelines by Tunkell et al [10]. The present evaluation raises questions on the feasibility of future research on hearing aids.…”

“…Für die Tinnituseffektivität (Übersicht in [58]) von konventionellen Hörgeräten liegen nur Arbeiten mit mäßigen oder schwachen Evidenzstärken vor [34,52,61,70]. Zudem sind die Ergebnisse widersprüch-lich.…”
