Amplified Photoacoustic Signal and Enhanced Photothermal Conversion of Polydopamine-Coated Gold Nanobipyramids for Phototheranostics and Synergistic Chemotherapy

Abstract: Light-responsive nanoprobes were suffering from the threat of high-dose laser irradiation, and it was important for constructing new nanoprobes for safe and efficient phototheranostics. Here, polydopamine (PDA)-coated gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs@PDA) were synthesized for amplified photoacoustic (PA) signal and enhanced photothermal conversion with low-dose laser irradiation and then doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded AuNBPs@PDA–DOX nanoprobes were constructed for PA imaging-guided synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT) … Show more

“…Light-responsive nanoprobes for safe and efficient phototheranostics consisting of PDA-coated gold nanobipyramids conjugated with doxorubicin drug were successfully synthesised by Liu et al [96]. The probes not only exhibited higher photothermal conversion efficiency (42.07%) and stronger photoacoustic signal than those of gold nanoparticle controls, but also possessed dual-responsive doxorubicin release upon pH and photothermal stimulation.…”

“…In addition to the compensating effect of multiple therapeutic methods, the combination of merits of single therapy also exhibits considerable therapeutic effect [120,121]. For example, Nokyoung et al assembled AuNPs on DNA hydrogels for effective chemo/PTT [122].…”

“…The pH-dependent nanoparticles, quenched by PDA, could be photoactivated only in the acidic environment of a tumor whereby they released the photosensitizer and displayed multimodal imaging capability due to strong affinity between metal ions and PDA and exhibit high antitumor PDT efficacy ( Dong et al, 2018 ). Various metal ions have been loaded onto PDA nanoparticles for bioimaging and photothermal cancer therapy simultaneously ( Miao et al, 2015 ; Ge et al, 2017 ; Feng et al, 2020 ; Liu et al, 2020 ). Photocatalytic organic nanoparticles composed of flavin-conjugated PDA NPs have been described to display xenobiotic-degrading enzyme analogous activity ( Fruk and Crocker, 2019 ).…”
