Amyoplasia revisited

Abstract: Amyoplasia is a specific type and the most common form of arthrogryposis (multiple congenital contractures). It is a clinical diagnosis at this time. Care should be used making the diagnosis because of the implications for recurrence, natural history, associated anomalies, and both etiology and pathogenesis. We reviewed over 600 published reports and 2,500 individual records to identify the 560 individuals reported here. Affected limbs had characteristic positions with fatty-fibrous replacement of muscle. Uppe… Show more

“…This combination is consistent with vascular effects on the developing spinal cord with amyoplasia [2] and a vascular pathogenesis for gastroschisis, where considerable evidence should be convincing [3]. Although, as the author notes, the limb deformities do not need immediate attention, there is some urgency, since "there appears to be a 4-month window after birth where physical therapy is particularly useful" [2].…”

“…It's frequency is one in 10,000. Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita is rarer, with a previously underestimated incidence of 1 in 3000 live births approximately, but 7 more recent studies have estimated the incidence to be between 1 in 4300-5100 [7][8][9].…”
