An abductive perspective on clinical reasoning and case formulation

Abstract: Clinical reasoning has traditionally been understood in terms of either hypothetico-deductive or Bayesian methods. However, clinical psychology requires an organizing framework that goes beyond the limits of these methods and characterizes the full range of reasoning processes involved in the description, understanding, and formulation of the difficulties presented by clients. In this article, the authors present a framework for clinical reasoning and case formulation that is largely based on a broad abductive… Show more

“…It is predicted that novice nurses and other clinicians can begin to use expert approaches to reasoning if they are taught how to think like experts (Rolfe ). Vertue and Haig () offer a model that highlights the various phases of abductive reasoning that nurses and other clinicians can follow to develop abductive reasoning skills and consequently improve their clinical reasoning abilities. These steps, along with steps of inductive and hypothetico‐deductive reasoning, are also outlined in the proposed reasoning model in Figure‐1.…”

“…На полето на медицината, особено во нејзиниот дијагностички сегмент, абдукцијата игра особено значајна улога (Console and Torasso, 1991;Dragulinescu, 2016;Vertue and Haig, 2008;Ward and Haig, 1997). Тука, поттикот за апликација на абдуктивното расудување е комбинацијата на симптомите на пациентот, особено на наодите што покажуваат абнормални вредности.…”

“…Abduction in the medical field plays an especially important role, primarily in its diagnostic aspect (Console and Torasso, 1991;Dragulinescu, 2016;Vertue and Haig, 2008;Ward and Haig, 1997). Here, the trigger for the application of abductive reasoning is the combination of a patient's symptoms, especially the findings that show abnormal values.…”
