An accessible STEM editor customizable for various local languages

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to facilitate the spread of accessible e-books, especially ones of STEM much more in developing countries, an efficient/systematic scheme to localize tools for producing/reading them should be established. Furthermore, even in many advanced countries, Print-disabled people still do not have a good tool to write a content including technical notations such as mathematical formulas in their own local language. This work is aimed at giving a practical solution for those proble… Show more

“…Since OCR addresses urgent needs, the respective functionality is concern of ongoing research and deep learning techniques are outperforming the state-of-the-art [3]. • ChattyInfty [38,43] is a comprehensive mathematical editor which represents terms by synthetic speech. The problem is that listening to terms makes them hard to understand and a supplementation of the verbal representation by tactile output -Braille -is missing.…”

“…In our accessible STEM-document editor, "ChattyInfty3," we have introduced a localization scheme to allow end users to customize easily its graphical user interface (GUI) and aloud reading of mathematical formulas so that they are represented in a local language [10]. This time, we have also developed a localization scheme in the InftyReader GUI.…”

“…In the latest version of our accessible STEM-document editor, “ChattyInfty3,” a new localization scheme has been compiled [ 8 ]. It allows end-users to incorporate the necessary definition files for aloud reading of mathematical notations in each local language efficiently/systematically into ChattyInfty3.…”
