An AIE-active phosphorescent Ir(iii) complex with piezochromic luminescence (PCL) and its application for monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Abstract: A neutral multifunctional dinuclear Ir(iii) complex 1 with a Schiff base bridging ligand is shown to combine aggregation-induced emission (AIE), piezochromic luminescence (PCL) and vapochromism.

“…The intense luminescence coming from supramolecular aggregates triggered the research in the field of mechanochromic and piezochromic fluorescent materials, since the color of the emission could possibly change by external compression or mechanical grinding. Recently, many reports have been published on the effective mechanism of piezochromic fluorescence based on the molecular aggregation state of AIE luminogens [61,62,63,67,68,69,70,71,72,73,74,75,76,77,78,79,80,81,82,83,84,85,86].…”

“…[23] Many pure organic mechanochromic materials with AIE-activem olecules were thus reported, [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31] along with organoboron complexes. [32,33] Regarding metal-based compounds that combine AIE and mechanochromic properties, few studies have been reported, with examplesb ased on iridium(III), [34][35][36][37][38][39] cadmium(II), [40] zinc(II), [41,42] and gold(I) [43] complexes.…”

“…As shown in Figure 10, all of the original nanoaggregate samples had sharp and strong peaks, but the intensity of the peaks decreased or even disappeared after grinding. The result implies that the molecular morphology changed from crystalline to amorphous [30][31][32], and red shift of λ em was attributed to the planarization induced by grinding. AIE molecules usually adopt a twisted configuration due to the steric hindrance between moieties and the formation of intermolecular cavities with a loose packing mode.…”
