An algorithm of decentralized encircling coverage and termination of a moving deformable region by mobile robotic sensor/actuator networks

Abstract: The paper introduces the problems of encircling coverage and termination of a moving a deformable planar region by a mobile sensor/actuator network. We propose a decentralized randomized algorithm for self-deployment of a network of mobile robotic sensors/actuators for these problems. In the encircling coverage problem, the aim is to deploy sensors around a bounded connected region so that any point of a certain neighbourhood of the region is sensed by at least one mobile robotic sensor. In the termination pro… Show more

“…The event region is neither determined nor factored in the sensor reporting, and the interactor coordination does not ensure event coverage. Therefore, we have also chosen to compare SACHS with the Savkin et alprotocol [18]. Savkin et al developed a distributed algorithm to deploy mobile nodes over triangular lattice that spans the entire event region.…”

“…Gage [22] has classified the coverage problem mainly into three configurations Blanket, Barrier and Sweep Coverage. But coverage can be of different types, like in [14], an encircling coverage has been introduced. So, we classify the below mentioned coverage problems on the basis of an objective to be achieved.…”

“…In a network, mobile sensor nodes can emulate the individual particle behaviour observed in a collective movement to navigate within the network. A distinguishing feature of mobile nodes is their dynamic decoupling, meaning the movement of one individual node does not directly affect its neighbouring nodes [ 15 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. This characteristic allows for the possibility of creating collective movement among mobile sensor nodes within a network, based on the nearest neighbour rule.…”
