This paper describes the design and the implementation of TransientMeter, a monitoring system for the detection, classification, and measurement of transient disturbances on electrical power systems. TransientMeter relies on a common object request broker architecture (CORBA) as a communication interface, wavelet-based methods for automatic signal classification and characterization, and on a smart trigger circuit for disturbance detection. The system has been successfully applied to detect, classify, and measure disturbances in an industrial environment.Index Terms-Distributed information systems, monitoring, neural networks, power quality, power systems, power system transients, wavelet transforms.
