An Analysis of Open-Ended Coaxial Probe Sensitivity to Heterogeneous Media

Abstract: Open-ended coaxial probe spectroscopy is commonly used to determine the dielectric permittivity of biological tissues. However, heterogeneities in the probe sensing region can limit measurement precision and reproducibility. This study presents an analysis of the coaxial probe sensing region to elucidate the effects of heterogeneities on measured permittivity. Coaxial probe spectroscopy at 0.5–20 GHz was numerically simulated while a homogenous background was perturbed with a small inclusion of contrasting per… Show more

“…The fields along the open‐ended flanged structure are used to measure the input admittance at the antenna terminal. “…The thermal damage may be restricted to the cancerous tissue with a suitable margin of safety to minimize the chance of damage to healthy tissue. Researchers anticipate that the microwave ablation applicator should produce a spherical ablation zone due to the almost spherical form of most tumors [3]. Therefore, an important feature of therapeutic microwave ablation antennas is to create a spherical ablation zone for tumor ablation, and hence, several types of microwave ablation antennas have been introduced to date.…”

“…The probe response, although inherently wideband, is actually frequency-limited from both sides, meaning that the measurement error increases as the frequency decreases below or increases above the working frequency range [15]. The probe response to inhomogeneous materials is very complex and often unknown [16][17][18][19]. When measuring layered materials, the result depends on the probe sensing depth, which should be determined for the used probe [20][21][22][23].…”
