Phrasal compounds are taken to be word-level structures that combine a lexical head with a phrasal non-head. Several claims have emerged from the pertinent literature: phrasal compounds allegedly only have nominal heads, can host a variety of syntactic structures in non-head position, are determinative, and are instances of expressive morphology. The existence of adjectival phrasal compounds is either explicitly denied in the literature, or considered a marginal phenomenon at best. This article presents data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA; Davies 2008) that show that adjectival phrasal compounds do exist in English. We demonstrate that they are similar to non-phrasal adjectival compounds and to nominal phrasal compounds. At the same time, they crucially differ from nominal compounds in the prototypical semantic relations between head and non-head: adjectival phrasal compounds are mostly similative-intensifying as opposed to determinative. We argue that this property is also found in noun-adjective compounds and follows naturally from the semantics of the head category in question, viz. adjectives as mostly gradable predicates. In turn, the majority of adjectival phrasal compounds in our data feature a strong expressive component, a characteristic they share with other phrasal compounds.

The occurrence of phrases inside words poses a challenge for theorizing about the boundaries of the domain of word formation as well as the architecture of morphology in general. This entry focuses on phrasal compounds, such as over‐the‐fence gossip , as the most typical and productive set of data and examines the structural characteristics and configurational factors playing a role in phrasal compounding. In the first part of this entry, grammatical generalizations in the field of phrasal compounding will be addressed in some detail, laying out the various types of phrasal compounds identified in the literature and highlighting their properties from a typological vantage point. The second part, based on empirical reasoning, investigates configurational and relational aspects and links them to syntactic, semantic and pragmatic traits of phrasal compounds. Lastly, different models of the boundary between the word‐building component of language and syntax are outlined, with examples of how insights from the domain of phrasal compounding are implemented in different accounts. The entry closes with a short conclusion.

Proceedings of the 20th International Conference, TSD 2017, Prague, Czech Republic, August 27-31, 2017International audienceWe present a method to identify and document a phenomenon on which there is very little empirical data: German phrasal compounds occurring in the form of as a single token (without punctuation between their components). Relying on linguistic criteria, our approach implies to have an operational notion of compounds which can be systematically applied as well as (web) corpora which are large and diverse enough to contain rarely seen phenomena. The method is based on word segmentation and morphological analysis, it takes advantage of a data-driven learning process. Our results show that coarse-grained identification of phrasal compounds is best performed with empirical data, whereas fine-grained detection could be improved with a combination of rule-based and frequency-based word lists. Along with the characteristics of web texts, the or-thographic realizations seem to be linked to the degree of expressivity
