An Analysis of Social Relationships’ Quality Associations with Hope Among Young Italians: the Role of NEET Status

Abstract: Hope is a personal trait stemming from both individual and social factors, including social relationships. Bearing that in mind, we tested how social support quality, described in terms of Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction (BPNS), is linked with hope dimensions of agency and pathways among young Italians in general and across those Neither in Employment, nor in Education or Training (NEET). These associations were examined controlling for several individual factors (e.g., educational level). A total of 30… Show more

“…These results are compatible with data from other Italian surveys, where it was demonstrated that the number of those aged 15-29 years old and involved neither in working activities, nor in education or training programs (called "NEETs") has increased from 19.6% in 2004 to 25.1% in 2020 [62]. These young people, now forming a relatively greater proportion of the overall Italian population, are reported to face more and more difficulties with finding social and, in particular, institutional support to guide their transition into the labor market [63]. These findings are different from data collected in other Western countries, in which age does not appear to influence financial happiness, and where the young tend to have a more positive perception of their quality of life [64,65].…”

“…Both education and training policies, as well as active labour market policies (Sahnoun and Abdennadher, 2018;Juznik Rotar, 2021) can be important for a smoother transition from education and training into employment (Müller, 2005). These policies can be important in bridging the gaps in school-towork transition and in mitigating the negative consequences for NEETs as confirmed by various EU countries (Bruno, Marelli and Signorelli, 2014;Vancea andUtzet, 2018, Caroleo, Rocca, Mazzocchi andQuintano, 2020;Simões, Marta, Marzana, Alfieri and Pozi, 2021).…”

“…NEET represents a significant issue due to its social and economic impacts, which include social exclusion, marginalization, decreased mental health, criminal activity, and permanent unemployment. Furthermore, it leads to the loss of potential human capital from the young population for future economic development (Alonso et al, 2022;Felaco & Parola, 2022;Fougère et al, 2009;Heckman et al, 2018;Jongbloed & Giret, 2022;Maguire et al, 2013;Noh & Lee, 2017;Simões et al, 2021). In recent years, the proportion of youth not engaged in education, employment, or training (NEET) has significantly increased in many European countries (Quintano et al, 2018).…”
