“…
To determine if actual practice was consistent with commonly recommended research methods and procedures, this study examined 130 studies reported over a 5-year period in three volumes of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST). The results were consistent with similar previous analyses (Shaver & Norton, 1980a& Norton, , 1980bWallen & Fraenkel, 1988a) and indicate that appropriate generalizations beyond the confines of the reported studies may be impossible for most (64%) of the JRST studies surveyed. The findings also show that replication studies, which could be employed to offset deficiencies in generalizability, were not commonly encountered (3%) in these 130 reports.

“…The answers to the questions posed in this study are essentially the same as the answers arrived at when general educational research and social studies research were analyzed in previous studies (Shaver & Norton, 1980a, 1980bWallen & Fraenkel, 1988a, 1988b. For Question I , science education researchers do not typically select their samples randomly from accessible populations.…”

“…This study is a 'philosophical inquiry' in the foundation of social studies (Stanley 1985a;Wallen and Fraenkel 1988;Fullinwider 1991) which is one of the grounded theory research approaches in qualitative-interpretative tradition (Glasser and Strauss 1971). The primary source is 25 of 36 academics works of Somantri about aspects of ontology, methodology, and epistemology of social studies collected in an edited book entitled "Promoting Social Education Reform" (Supriadi and Mulyana 2001).…”
