An analysis of the Verbal Comprehension Index of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Fourth Edition (WAIS–IV) using the Model of Hierarchical Complexity (MHC): Why might stage be a better measure of “smarts” than verbal IQ?

Abstract: While IQ tests are the most common and largely accepted measurement of how "smart" a person is, whether they are the best measure of this construct is up for debate. This paper will discuss the relationship between IQ tests and their corresponding order of hierarchical complexity developmental stage scores based on the model of hierarchical complexity (MHC). The Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) scales of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) were used for scoring. The study shows that,… Show more

“…Stage is a much better measure of smarts because it is unidimensional, as well as culture and class free. We also have evidence (Featherston et al, 2016) that intelligence tests measure relatively lowbehavioral stage skills. These are at most comparable with skills used by workers in midmanagement jobs.…”

“…The low IQ represents Concrete Stage 9 and Abstract Stage 10 performance. IQ does not measure Metasystematic Stage 13; however, given the existing data on the progression of stage (Commons, Miller, et al, 2014) if an adolescent is performing at the Systematic Stage 12, it is highly likely that the person will move up to Metasystematic Stage 13 (Featherston et al, in press).…”

“…These sequences exist in every domain, including, but not limited to, the mathematical, logical, scientific, moral, social, and interpersonal domains. The stages of the MHC have been shown to predict humans’ “smartness” in the colloquial sense using the laundry and balance beam instruments (Featherston et al, 2016; Commons et al, 2008; Commons & Chen, 2014).…”
