An Animated Visual Representation of Real‐Time Resource Flows Through a Community Enhances Systems Thinking

Abstract: We report on two studies designed to test the effect of visual feedback technology on several dimensions of systems thinking. Participants were exposed to ‘Citywide Dashboard’ (CWD), a visual depiction of a city designed for display on digital signage. CWD is dynamically animated based on real‐time water and electricity flow data and environmental conditions. In study 1, college students were exposed to CWD (or a control) for 6 days. Exposure enhanced perceptions of ecological embeddedness, connectedness to na… Show more

“…As ecological embeddedness implies a fundamentally different worldview, ecological embeddedness also signals an expansion in the role of marketing. This is supported by research on participants who viewed animated real-time water and electricity flow data and environmental conditions which resulted in enhanced perceptions of ecological embeddedness as well as perceptions of responsibility and impact (Petersen et al 2018).…”

“…Children in communities that live close to nature expand this systems intelligence as they are taught to take careful notice of patterns and relationships in their surroundings (Hatcher et al, 2009). Not being in close contact with nature is one of the things that can work against developing our systems intelligence, at least as this applies to the damage our actions are doing to the natural world (Petersen et al, 2018). The counterintuitive point here is that we need to think carefully about the actual knowledge gap.…”

“…The challenge for global researchers is to develop a more sophisticated understanding of how nature relatedness fits into the planetary health imperative; how is nature relatedness fostered and how is it influenced by cultural experience and socioeconomic variables [52,53]? What are the biological underpinnings of nature relatedness in relation to non-communicable disease [54]?…”
